Discovering Bear Rock: a path between history and legend
An iconic symbol of Gallura: the Bear Rock, also known as Capo d'Orso, is one of Sardinia's most famous natural monuments. Located in the territory of Palau, this striking granite formation dominates the landscape with its unmistakable silhouette that, from a certain angle, resembles the figure of a bear.
Bear Rock: where it is located
Reaching the Bear Rock is easy and suitable for everyone. From the centre of Palau, just follow Via Capo d'Orso for about 4.3 kilometres, until you come to a bar on the right. Continuing for about 100 metres on a dirt road, you arrive at a wooden gate that marks the beginning of the trail. The path is well marked and presents no particular difficulty, leading you directly to the top of the granite rise.
Bear Rock: a breathtaking view
Once on the watchtower, you will be confronted with a breathtaking panorama that stretches over the islands of the Maddalena Archipelago, the Gallura coastline and the crystal-clear sea. To admire the true image of the bear, we recommend continuing on the rocks to the left of the turret. The surrounding landscape also offers a privileged view of the Bocche di Bonifacio, the strait separating Sardinia from Corsica, where the sea meets with spectacular winds and currents
Bear Rock: a place steeped in history
The Bear Rock was already known in antiquity and was an important landmark for sailors navigating the seas off the Gallura coast and the Straits of Bonifacio. Ptolemy described its geographical coordinates and called it 'Promontorium Arcti', i.e. 'Bear Promontory'. This indicates how recognisable and significant it was already in ancient times. In addition to its function as a natural guide, it is thought to have been a sacred place for some local people, who worshipped the curiously shaped rock formations.
Unique geological heritage
The Bear Rock is the result of a millennial process of erosion caused by wind and rain, and is an important testimony to nature's odyssey. The granite rock has been modelled over time, assuming a shape that today arouses wonder and curiosity. This type of formation is characteristic of Gallura, a region famous for its landscape shaped by atmospheric agents.
Bear Rock: the legend of the Lestrigons
According to writer Victor Bérard, Cape d'Orso could be identified with the land of the Lestrigons, a people of anthropophagous giants described in Homer's Odyssey. Odysseus, having landed here in search of food and water for his crew, is said to have come across this hostile people who caused the loss of two of his ships. Although there is no historical evidence to confirm this theory, the suggestion is strong and adds a touch of mystery to an already fascinating place.
A place of myths and tales
The legends and stories linked to the Bear Rock are not limited to the Odyssey. Local tradition tells of spirits inhabiting the rock, protectors of nature and the sea, feared by fishermen but respected as guardians of the coast. This makes the visit not only a visual but also an emotional experience, a plunge into Sardinia's ancient culture and beliefs.
